    Red Bean

I still haven’t felt the climate in which snowflakes bloom
When we shiver together, we understand what tenderness is
I still haven’t held your hand and walked through the deserted dunes
Perhaps I will learn to cherish eternity

Sometimes, sometimes I believe that everything has an end
There are times for gatherings and for partings
But I sometimes would rather choose to be nostalgic than to let go
When the scenery is clear, maybe you’ll accompany me to see the flowing stream

I still haven’t simmered the red beans for you, into wounds that linger
And we share it together to understand the sorrow of being lovesick
I don’t yet feel well without awakening to a tender kiss
Perhaps it is in my presence that you seek freedom from solitude

Sometimes, sometimes I believe that everything has an end
There are times for gatherings and for partings
But I sometimes would rather choose to be nostalgic than to let go
When the scenery is clear, maybe you will accompany me to see the flowing stream
Sometimes, sometimes I believe that everything has an end

Set to the tune of hāo lǐ xíng

Gallant men there were, from the Eastern lands,
    rallying against the nefarious ones.
At Mengjin, where the last Alliance met,
    they vowed
to free the Capital from the evil shroud.

Though their forces were one, their minds
    divided; hesitant they marched
    like geese leaderless.
    And not long after,
    they fought
among themselves; for profit they sought.

The younger Yuan himself an emperor made,
In the north the other carved a seal of jade.

When last did armour leave the soldiers’ frames?
Lice and fleas infest the long-worn metal.
From a myriad families people are lost
    to untimely death, while
sun-blanched bones lie bare in fields
abandoned, nor a rooster heard for a thousand li.
Of a hundred men who live here now,
    would even one be left
    by the morrow?
That very thought breaks my heart with sorrow.

  3. A Blooming Tree by Hsi Muren (Xi Murong)

    A Blooming Tree
    ——by Xi Murong
May Buddha let us meet in my most beautiful hours,
I have prayed for it for five hundred years.
    Buddha made me a tree
By the path you may take.
In full blossoms I’m waiting in the sun
Every flower carrying my previous hope.
    As you are near,
    Listen carefully
The quivering leaves are my waiting zeal,
As you pass by the tree without noticing me.
    My friend,
    Upon the ground behind you
    Is not the fallen petals
    But my withered heart.

  4. Reflections on the Ancient Red Cliff-
    To the tune of Niannujiao

    Dà jiāngdōng qù,
    làng táo jǐn,
    qiāngǔ fēngliú rénwù.
    Gù lěi xībian,
    réndào shì,
    sānguó zhōu láng chìbì.
    Luàn shí chuān kōng,
    jīng tāo pāi àn,
    juǎn qǐ qiān duī xuě.
    Jiāngshān rú huà,
    yīshí duōshǎo háojié.
    Yáoxiǎng gōng jǐn dāngnián,
    xiǎo qiáo chū jiàle,
    xióngzī yīng fā.
    Yǔshàn guān jīn,
    tánxiào jiān,
    qiáng lǔ huīfēiyānmiè.
    gùguó shényóu,
duōqíng yīng xiào wǒ, zǎoshēng huáfà.
    Rénshēng rú mèng,
    yīzūn hái lèi jiāng yuè.

    The Great River flows,
    Eastward waves sweeping away,
    For thousands of years,
    gallant heroes.
West of the ancient fort, they say,
Stands The Red Cliff of the Three-Kingdoms’ Duke Zhou.
Rocks pierce the sky, shore-tearing Waves swirl into piles of snow.
What a glorious sweep of land,
Once a stage for so many a hero!
My thoughts drift to those years when Zhou
Had newly married the beautiful Qiao,
    Vigour and valour aglow.
A feather fan and a silken hat,
He masterminded the fire-attack on the foe–
    Over a casual chat
To see their fleet perish, blow by blow.
Back from my mental vagrancy in that bygone age,
I must laugh at myself: letting sentiments grow
    Into grey hairs, too soon.
But isn’t life a dream, after all?
Let me pledge this cup to the River,
    To the Moon.

    抬望眼,仰天長嘯,壯懷激烈。
    三十功名塵與土,
    八千里路雲和月。
    莫等閒,白了少年頭,空悲切。
    靖康恥,猶未雪;
    臣子恨,何時滅。
    駕長車踏破賀蘭山缺。
    壯志饑餐胡虜肉,
    笑談渴飲匈奴血。
    待從頭,收拾舊山河,朝天闕

    My wrath bristles through my helmet, the rain stops as I stand by the rail;
I look up towards the sky and let loose a passionate roar.
At the age of thirty, my deeds are nothing but dust, my journey has taken me over eight thousand li
So do not sit by idly, for young men will grow old in regret.
The Humiliation of Jingkang still lingers, when will the pain of the Emperor’s subjects ever end?
Let us ride our chariots through the Helan Pass,
There we shall feast on barbarian flesh and drink the blood of the Xiongnu.
Let us begin anew to recover our old empire, before paying tribute to the Emperor.

    English
    Homesickness
    Yu Guangzhong

    In my childhood,
    Homesickness was a small stamp.
    I was here.
And my mother was over there:
    When I grew up,
    Homesickness was a narrow ship-ticket.
    I was here
And my bride was over there:
    And then
    Homesickness was a small tomb.
    With me outside
    And my mother inside:
    But now,
    Homesickness is a shallow strait.
    I am on this side.
And the mainland is on the other side.

Bring the wine – Jiāng Jìn Jiǔ

    君不見,
    黃河之水天上來,
    奔流到海不復回;
    君不見,
    高堂明鏡悲白髮,
    朝如青絲暮成雪。
    人生得意須盡歡,
    莫使金樽空對月。
    天生我材必有用,
    千金散盡還復來。
    烹羊宰牛且為樂,
    會須一飲三百杯。
    岑夫子,
    丹丘生,
    將進酒,
    杯莫停。
    與君歌一曲,
    請君為我傾耳聽。
    鐘鼓饌玉不足貴,
    但願長醉不復醒。
    古來聖賢皆寂寞,
    惟有飲者留其名。
    陳王昔時宴平樂,
    斗酒十千恣欢谑。
    主人何為言少錢,
    徑須沽取對君酌。
    五花馬,
    千金裘,
    呼兒將出換美酒,
    與爾同銷萬古愁。

    Have you not seen –
that the waters of the Yellow River come from upon Heaven,
    surging into the ocean, never to return again;
    Have you not seen –
in great halls’ bright mirrors, they grieve over white hair,
at dawn like black threads, by evening becoming snow.
In human life, accomplishment must bring total joy,
do not allow an empty goblet to face the moon.
    Heaven made me – my abilities must have a purpose;
I spend a thousand gold pieces completely, but they’ll come back again.
    Boil a lamb, butcher an ox – now we shall be joyous;
we must drink three hundred cups all at once!
    Master Cen,
    Dan Qiusheng,
    bring in the wine! –
    the cups must not stop!
    I’ll sing you a song –
I ask that you lend me your ears.
    Bells, drums, delicacies, jade – they are not fine enough;
I only wish to be forever drunk and never sober again.
    Since ancient times, sages have all been solitary;
only a drinker can leave his name behind!
    The Prince of Chen, in times past, held feasts at Pingle;
ten thousand cups of wine – abandon restraint and be merry!
Why would a host speak of having little money? –
you must go straight and buy it – I’ll drink it with you!
    My lovely horse
my furs worth a thousand gold pieces,
call the boy and have him take them to be swapped for fine wine,
and together with you I’ll wipe out the cares of ten thousand ages.

    Without any precautions
    Without any worries
You just appeared in my world
    Surprise me
But you are like this again
Before I knew it, it disappeared quietly.
From my world there is no audio
    All that remains is memories
You exist within the depths of my mind
In my dreams, in my heart, in my singing
You exist within the depths of my mind
In my dreams, in my heart, in my singing
    Remember we used to
Walking side by side through the bustling alley
Although you and I are strangers, passers-by
But each other still felt each other’s
    One look, one heartbeat
    An unexpected joy
    Seems like a dream, destined
You exist within the depths of my mind
In my dreams, in my heart, in my singing
You exist within the depths of my mind
In my dreams, in my heart, in my singing
    Why the world is big
Is it fate? Is it God’s will?
You exist within the depths of my mind
In my dreams, in my heart, in my singing

  11. 再別康橋 by Xu Zhimo

    “Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again”
    Lightly I leave,
    as lightly I came;
    I lightly wave goodbye,
to the sunlit clouds in the western sky.
The golden willows of that riverside,
    are brides in the setting sun;
their glimmering reflections in the water,
ripple in the depth of my heart.
The waterlilies in the soft mud,
    sway splendidly under the water.
In the gentle waves of the Cam,
I would be a water plant!
That pool in the shade of elm trees,
    is not springwater, but a heavenly rainbow;
    crumbling amongst the floating grasses,
the settling rainbow seems like a dream.
Looking for dreams? Push a punt,
    to where the grass is greener still upstream;
    a boat laden with starlight,
singing freely in the glorious light of stars.
    But I cannot sing freely,
silence is the music of my departure,
even the summer insects are quiet for me,
    tonight’s Cambridge is silent!
    Quietly I leave,
    as quietly I came;
I cast my sleeves a little,
not taking even a strand of cloud away.

    Please Do Not Smoke Upwind

    Yu Kwang-chung

    Please do not smoke upwind
because there is someone below you
I have already coughed three times
    (coughing/clearing throat sound)
Nevertheless you pretend not to hear
Even if you want to smoke
    Let other people breathe
    To breathe fresh air
    (coughing/clearing throat sound)
There is someone downwind begging you

    Please do not lecture upwind
Please do not urinate upwind in the open
Please do not spit upwind all the way up there
Please do not smoke upwind in the direction of the breeze
Because there is someone below you
    (coughing/clearing throat sound)

Please do not do these upwind
Because the direction of the wind can change at any moment
    Maybe tomorrow
    (coughing/clearing throat sound) perhaps
    You will be located downwind

  13. 波羅蜜多- bōluómìduō – THe Heart Sutra

When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara was flowing deeply into the state of Prajna Paramita (the Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom).
He looked down and perceived that all Five Skandhas are empty, thus He overcame all ills and sufferings.
    O Sariputra,
form does not differ from the void, and the void does not differ from form.
(for details in interpreting “form” and “void”, please see Personal Comments – On The Contents Of The Heart Sutra below)
    form is void and void is form;
the same also applies to feelings, perceptions, volitions and consciousness.
    O Sariputra,
all dharmas are marked with voidness (or emptiness): they are neither created nor destructible,
they cannot be defiled or purified, they cannot be augmented nor diminished.
    Hence, within voidness, there is no form, feeling, perception, volition, nor consciousness;
    no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, nor perception; no form, sound, smell, taste, tangible objects nor objects of mind;
    no realm of the sense of sight and so forth, even to the extent of no realm of consciousness;
    there is no annoyance from ignorance, and so no annihilation of annoyance from ignorance;
    and there is even no decay and death, and so no extinction of decay and death;
    there is no suffering and no origin of suffering, and there is no cessation of suffering and no path to the cessation of suffering;
there is no wisdom and no attainment of anything whatsoever.

There was once a kind old man who lived with his horse and son. Together they lived near the wastelands of china. One morning a stableman left the stable door open and the old man’s favorite horse escaped into the wastelands. When the old man’s neighbors heard the news, they came to comfort him and told him they were sorry for his misfortune. But the old man was not upset about losing his horse. The old man said, “Don’t go too far — simply say that the horse is not in the stable. This is the fact; everything else is a judgment. Whether it is a misfortune or not, how do you know? How can you judge?” Then one night, the horse returned. And not only did he come back, he brought a dozen wild horses with him. Again the neighbors gathered and they said, “Old man, you were right and we were wrong. It was not a misfortune, it proved to be a blessing.” The old man said, “Again you are going too far. Just say that the horse is back, and say that twelve horses have come with the horse — but don’t judge.”
The young son started to train the wild horses; just a week later he fell from a wild horse and his legs were broken. The neighbors said, “You were right, again you proved right. It was not a blessing, it was again a misfortune. Your only son has lost his legs, and in your old age he was your only support.”
The old man said, `You are obsessed with judgment. Don’t go that far. Say only that my son has broken his legs. Who knows whether this is a misfortune or a blessing? Soon the country went to war with the huns in the wasteland and all the young people of the town were forcibly taken for the military. Only the old man’s son was left because he was crippled. A blessing is a curse, and a curse is a blessing.
