I know I probably have a lot of mistakes in there. So this is my really rough draft.

I love traveling! When I am older, I hope to travel a lot. When I was a kid/younger, my whole family traveled a lot. My dad is a college professor, so he gets sabbatical. One sabbatical we all went to England. My dad taught at Oxford University. I attended first grade in England. We lived in England for 6 months. Today, my friends and I still keep in touch. England’s weather and Washington’s weather are approximately the same, it can be a little cold and a little rainy. But England is still very beautiful.

When my older brother was to attend college, my parents told me and my siblings we could go on a family vacation. We went to Italy. We stayed there for 3 weeks. Italy is very beautiful. There are many fresh flowers. My mom, my sister, and I went horseback riding through soo many sunflowers, it was amazing/fantastic! My younger brothers really liked Italian food. Italy has very good pizza, pasta, and gelato!
I think traveling has given me a lot of experiences. I have gained a lot of knowledge about many foreign cultures. February 2006 I went to China. I lived in Xi’an with a Chinese host family. I lived in their home for 4 months. America and China are very different. The food, culture and language are not at all the same. I needed to learn from experience. I learned to ask for directions, order food, buy train and plane tickets, and to bargain for things. I learned a lot about China. I also learned a lot about myself.

Not only have I gone to England and Italy, but I have also gone to Canada, Switzerland, Costa Rica, and China. This summer I will go to Taiwan. I am very Excited!

Nikola Tesla was a famous electrical engineer. He was born in 1856 in Croatia, and emigrated to the United States in 1884. In the U.S., he was hired by Thomas Edison’s company, but he was not paid. Tesla asked why he received no pay, and Edison told him, “You don’t understand American humor.” He was enraged, and so he quit his job and started his own company. Several years later he invented an alternating current electric motor, but Thomas Edison invented a direct current motor at the same time. Because electricity was still a new technology and the two were trying to sell the same kind of product, they became rivals.

This competition was called the War of Currents. Edison said that direct current was safer than alternating current, and he built the electric chair using alternating current to prove that alternating current was deadly. However, Tesla’s invention was very inexpensive, and he was able to sell more products. Alternating current eventually became the most common kind of electricity, but by that time, Tesla had lost all his money in advertising his invention.

In his middle years, Tesla also invented the first radio, but this invention was taken away by Guglielmo Marconi in a lawsuit. Additionally, his inventions started becoming stranger and stranger; for example, he told some of his friends that he had plans to build a laser weapon. He also became obsessed with pigeons and the number three, probably because he was developing a mental illness. Although there were some who said that he was very handsome, he never married or had children because he felt that a family would interfere with his research. On January 7, 1943, he passed away in New York City.

    “Slapping Water”

I’d like to tell you a kung fu story that’s not too well known…
Many years ago, a young man named Tai Kui lived in a very small village in Shandong province. The landlord of this village was even greedier than Zhu Bajie and exploited all of the villagers. Tai Kui’s parents really had no means of living, so they gathered the little bit of grain the family had for Tai Kui to bring and give to the Shao-lin temple. This way, Tai Kai would be able to study Shao-lin kung fu. They thought if there was someone who knew martial arts in the village the landlord wouldn’t dare to bully the villagers.

Tai Kui left his village (hometown) to go find the Shao-lin temple. After many days, he arrived and the Shao-lin monks greeted him. Although Tai Kui was exhausted from walking, he immediately kowtowed, asking to become an apprentice, and gave the monks his offering. The monks kindly accepted his offer, and agreed to let him study kung fu with one condition. He had to do exactly what his Master said. Tai Kui thought of his hometown, his family, and the terrible landlord; his heart was full of emotion…He said, “Of course I agree!” thanking and kowtowing (to the monks). After that, he entered the temple with the monks.

After a few days, Tai Kui met his Master. The old Master brought him to an isolated room. Except for a large iron cauldron, there was nothing inside. The old Master said, “First fill the cauldron with water. Then, (use your hands to) slap the water. When you have slapped all of the water out, fill it again.”

Without the slightest hesitation, Tai Kui picked up the bucket and started filling the cauldron with water. Day after day, week after week, month after month, Tai Kui didn’t stop slapping water. He thought of learning with the monks how to punch, how to kick, how to use a staff to fight, and he became very excited…he wondered whether his Master would start teaching him some kung fu. After a year had passed, when Tai Kui was carrying water (on a pole) to fill the cauldron again, the old Master came.

Tai Kui said, “Master, I have been slapping water for one year. What should I do now?”

The old Master only said, “Slap water.”

Tai Kui didn’t dare complain nor did he dare to protest, but he was so angry! After all, he had already been there for a year, but he hadn’t even learned one punch or one kick! He could only slap water! So Tai Kui showed all of his pent up frustration with one slap! This slap was so strong that almost all of the water in the cauldron went out from his hit!

The Master looked over Tai Kui…

He said, “Your training is over. Go home.”

The old master turned and walked away without giving Tai Kui one more look. Tai Kui knew that because his temper was so bad, he would certainly never be able to study kung fu at the Shao-lin temple again. Tai Kui was very dispirited, but he didn’t have any other choice; he could only leave the Shao-lin temple and return home without learning even one of the simplest fighting sets.

When he arrived at his hometown, he was extremely ashamed, but the villagers were eager to see his kung fu.

Tai Kui said, “I really didn’t learn anything! I really am unworthy!”

But they still wouldn’t stop; they were still excited to see Tai Kui’s kung fu. The villagers thought he was probably just being modest.

“(None of) The Shao-lin monks don’t like to show off their martial arts,” one woman said.

So the villagers decided to throw a banquet for Tai Kui to celebrate, where he would perform his kung fu.

At the time of the banquet, even the landlord came because he wanted to see how much Tai Kui’s martial skill had improved. Although his family kept urging him to perform, Tai Kui just lowered his head and ate without saying one word.

His little sister said, “Come on! Perform your kung fu! Come on, come on! We’ve been waiting for you to return home so long! Finally, Tai Kui’s anger rose too high. He stood up and hit the wooden table with one slap! “I haven’t learned anything!” he screamed! As soon as his palm hit the table, the table broke into pieces!

Tai Kui’s family didn’t ask him to perform again. The landlord left without saying a word and immediately relaxed his harsh control on the villagers.

As for Tai Kui? He learned not to underestimate what his Master said again. Afterwards, he continued to work hard at practicing his kung fu.

Zìcóng wǒ lái pǔjí wān dàxué yǐ hòu, wǒ cóng yī gè hàixiū hé méiyǒu xìnxīn de nǚhái zǐ zhuǎnhuà chéng yī gè hěn lèguān hé hěn héqún de rén.
Ever since I came to University of Puget Sound, I have transformed from a shy and low self confidence girl to an optimistic and social person.
wǒ hěn xǐhuān pǔjí wān dàxué yīnwei zhègè dàxué gěi wǒ hěnduō chéngzhǎng de jīhuì.
I really like University of Puget Sound because this college has given me a lot of opportunities to grow and mature.
wǒ zài dàxué de dìyī nián bú tài quèdìng wǒ shìbúshì xǐhuān UPS, yīnwei wǒ hěn xiǎngniàn wǒ zhōngxué shí de péngyou hé wǒde jiārén.
My first year at college, I was not sure whether I like UPS or not because I was very homesick for my high school friends and my family.
wǒ yǐqián hěn ài yóuyǒng, wǒ zài wǒde zhōngxué yóuyǒng yóu le sì nián, yě shì xuéxiào yóuyǒng duì de duīzhǎng.
I used to love swimming. I swam at my high school for four years and was even the swimming captain.
But once I got to college, I decided to stop swimming because being in the college swim team was too exhausting.
wǒmen xūyào měitiān zǎoshang wǔ diǎn zhōng jiù qǐchuáng qù yóuyǒngchí liànxí. měitiān liànxí sì gè xiǎoshí, gēnběn méiyǒu shíjiān qù wán huò zuò gōngkè.
Everyday, we needed to get out of bed at five in the morning to go to swimming practice. We practiced for four hours everyday and we didn’t even have time to work on homework or relax and play.
suǒyǐ zài dàxué, wǒ juédìng zhǎo bié de huódòng, kěyǐ ràng wǒ rèn shí xīn péngyou yě kěyǐ gěi wǒ xīn de jīngyàn.
So at college, I decided to find other activities to help me meet new friends and can give me a new experience.
wǒ cānjiā hěnduō huódòng, xiàng nǚ xuésheng lián yì huì hé xiào nèi zhùsù shēnghuó.
I joined a lot of different activities like a sorority and residence life.
wǒ hěn xǐhuān dāng yī gè sùshè zhùjiào yīnwei wǒ kěyǐ gěi xīn tóngxué jiànyì yě kěyǐ bāng tāmen shíxiàn tāmende mùbiāo.
I really like being a resident assistant because I can give new students advice and help them achieve their goals.
wǒ búdàn bāng xīn lái de xue2 shēng shìyìng xuéxiào de shēnghuó, wǒ yě cóng tāmen nà ér xué dào hěnduō.
Not only do I help new students adapt to college life, I also learn al to from them.
wǒde sùshè zhùjiào de gōngzuò shì gè hěn hǎo de xuéxí jīngyàn, yīnwei wǒ kěyǐ liànxí hé zēngjìn wǒde lǐngdǎo jìnéng. suīrán wǒde sùshè zhùjiào de gōngzuò hěn máng, yě yǒu hěnduō de yālì, kěshì wǒ juédé wǒ shì yī gè hǎo de bǎngyàng, yě kěyǐ gěi tóngxué men hěn zhēnchéng hé hěn yǒuyòng de zhōnggào.
My resident assistant job is very good learning experience because I can practice and further advance my leadership skills. Although my resident assistant job is very busy and has a lot of pressure, I feel that I am a good example and I can give genuine and useful advice.
cānjiā nǚ xuésheng zhèn yì huì ràng wǒ rènshi liǎo hěnduōrén. yī gè zhèn yì huì shì yī gè hěn hǎo de shè tuán, wǒmen yǒu hěnduō bùtóng de hǎowán de huódòng. xiàng shèjiāo wǔhuì, bāngzhù háizi men yuèdú, zài gōngyuán zhòng huā, hé chóují zījīn bāngzhù xīnzàngbìng. zhè jǐ gè bùtóng de huódòng ràng wǒ gǎnjué wǒ zài bāngzhù biérén yě zài huí kuì shèhuì.
Being in a sorority lets me meet a lot of people. A sorority is a very good association because we do a lot of different fun activities. We do activities like social dances, helping students learn how to read, planting flowers in the park, and raising money for helping heart disease. All these different activities make me feel like I am helping other people and giving back to my community.
wǒ zài zhèn yì huì yǒu hěnduō hěn hǎo de péngyou, tāmen dōu cháng bāng wǒ. rúguǒ wǒ pèng dào rènhé de wèntí. wǒ zhīdào wǒ dōu kěyǐ yīkào xìnrèn tāmen.
At my sorority, I have a lot of good friends. They all help me; if I have any kind of problem, I know that I can trust and depend on them.
pǔjí wān dàxué bāngzhù wǒ zhǎngdà, yě ràng wǒ gèng liǎojiě zìjǐ. wǒde dàxuéshēng huó hěn máng kěshì wǒ hěn kuàilè, yīnwei wǒ hěn xǐhuān wǒde gōngzuò hé huódòng. wǒ yǒudiǎnr jǐnzhāng kěshì yě hěn xīngfèn, yīnwei míngnián wǒ shì dàxué dì sān nián de xuésheng. wǒ yǒu xìnxīn wǒ yīdìng kěyǐ chǔlǐ hǎo wǒ suǒyǒu de gōngzuò.
University of Puget Sound helped me grow and help me better understand myself. My college life is very busy but I am so happy because I love my job and activities. I’m a little nervous but excited for next year because I’ll be a third year college student. I have confidence that I will be able to figure out all my activities and work.

    Tea
In China, tea is very influential aspect of the life of Chinese people. There are a lot of types of Chinese teas, for example green tea, black/red tea, oolong tea, white tea, yellow tea, and scented/flower tea; there are also various other teas. There is a legend, one summer day many years ago, the Emperor Shen Nong was sitting beneath a Camellia sinensis, and leaf fell into the boiling water. After he drank the tea, he discovered the method of brewing tea. It is said that because Emperor Shen Nong liked tea, he lived to be five thousand years old. In 2737 BCE the Chinese began to know how to brew tea.
Green tea is not fermented tea. The benefits of green tea are anti-aging, the prevention of bad breath, and detoxification. Green tea has EGCG, which is a powerful antioxidant. EGCG can kill cancer cells. The most famous green tea is dragon well tea. The production Dragon Well tea at the Dragon Well Mountains is very famous. Dragon Well tea is an emerald color, very fragrant, and has a sweet and refreshing taste. I really like Dragon Well tea.
Black/red tea is also known as fermented tea. Only the new leaves are used for the production of the tea. After the tea is already withered, then it is fermented and dried. Chinese believe that drinking black/red tea can help digestion.
Oolong tea is also known as blue tea. Oolong tea is made from blending green tea and black tea. Blue tea is also a tea that is not fermented. The advantages of Oolong tea include breaking down fat to help people lose weight. I often like to drink a cup of ginseng oolong tea.
White tea is not fermented, fast-dried tea. It is the specialty of Fujian. Previously poor Chinese people didn’t have tea, so when guests came they were given water that was called white tea. The benefits of white tea include helping blood circulation, enhancing immune system and protecting the heart and blood vessels.
If you let wet tea leaves to turn yellow by themselves, you get yellow tea. Since the imperial color is yellow, The tea served to the Emperor is high-quality yellow tea. Yellow tea can help the body detoxify.
Flower/Scented tea is made with flowers and green tea leaves. When processing tea, the tea is put under several layers of flowers. The tea leaves will then absorb the aroma and taste of the flowers. Common flower/scented teas are jasmine tea, orchids tea, rose tea, and osmanthus tea. I especially like jasmine tea.
Tea represents respect, happiness, and sincerity. The best time to drink tea is when it is hot. The tea starts to oxidize after brewing. Drinking strong tea can cause insomnia and abdominal pain. The best time is drink tea is between two meals.
There are many tea customs. The younger generation always serves a cup of tea to the elders to show respect. At family gatherings, people go to a restaurant and drink tea. When people want to apologize, they serve tea.

The Strange Tales of Liao Zhai is a compilation of almost 500 strange stories. It was written by Pu Songling during the Qing Dynasty. The Strange Tales of Liao Zhai contain a number of interesting short stories; describing many supernatural things including ghosts, monsters, and fox spirits. It is said that Pu Songling was disgusted and disillusioned with Chinese society, so in his stories his characters are often weak, gullible, or stupid; conversely, the ghosts/spirits in his stories are often genuine and honest. The Strange Tales of Liao Zhai contain many ghost stories, one of them is a story called Xiaoqian. Just like Wu Chengen used his imagination to write Journey to the west, Deng Shan adds his imagination to write a new version of the Xiaoqian story.

Xiaoqian tells the story of one Zhejiang province native named Ningcai chen and his travels to Beijing to take the imperial examinations, and all of the strange things he encountered on the way. Ningcaichen was very good natured, his behavior was very generous, outspoken and honestly dignified. He always told everyone: “my love is single-minded, it will not be easily changed”. Ningcai chen was also a Buddhist. It is said that many years previously Tangsan Zang trained him, so he can exercise control over the four Buddhist elements: earth, fire, wind, and water; everyone respected him.

Ningcaichen stopped to rest on the way and came across a fencer named Yanchixia, who was under attack by bandits. Ning cai chen prayed to Buddha, and immediately the earth under the bandits feet changed into mud and they sank into the mire. Yanchixia was very grateful, he warned Ningcaichen of a monster that stole souls and presented Ningcaichen with his old sack covered sword as a gift. Several days later Ningcaichen found himself north of Jinhua city and saw an old desolate temple; he decided to stop and rest there.
Inside the temple grew many tall weeds and dust filled the air. Obviously no one had been there for a long while. Suddenly, several hundred small demons leaped out of the weeds! They spread their bloody mouths open like sacrificial bowls, their hands looked like scythes! Ningcaichen immediately invoked one of the many names of Buddha, then fire sprayed out of his mouth and all the little demons burned to death. Again at midnight a female ghost named Niexiaoqian came looking for Ningcaichen. Xiaoqian was very bright and beautiful, she attempted to seduce Ningcaichen, but Ningcaichen refused. Niexiaoqian fell in love with the upright and outspoken Ningcaichen, and helped him escape the soul stealing demon. Ningcaichen and Niexiaoqian returned to Ningcaichen’s village together, and decided to get married. The evil spirit unexpectedly followed them home. It’s eyes were like a raging inferno, its appearance was extremely ferocious and frightening. Xiaoqian used the fencers Yanchixias old sword sack to subdue the evil spirit. Afterwards, they lived happily for the rest of their lives.
