A Brief History of Modern Chinese Government
China is currently under the governance of a one party system, run by the Chinese Communist Party. From 1924 to 1950 the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) fought a civil war against the Chinese Nationalist party, after which the CCP seized power on October 1st, 1949. Although Mao Zedong founded a Communist Nation, China’s current economic system is State-owned Capitalism, because Deng Xiaoping transformed China’s Socialist economic system into a Capitalist one. Thus, China’s modern government’s party platform is full of contradictions.
For instance, Chinese people can make a great deal of money, but they cannot hold elections. China’s offshore neighbors, Japan and Taiwan are both democratically elected governments, but China’s current government insists upon utilizing a Police State system. Although in successive years the CCP has faced international pressure, they will not loosen their grip on power easily. What is interesting about China’s current government is that in theory, it is a collaboratively governed nation, but China’s actual rulers are a small group of oligarchs who hold absolute power.
However, China has recently had a lot of success, because of their use of the State-Owned Capitalist system. China’s system is far more efficient than America’s. This is because if China’s government wants to build a modern subway system, they need not ask for the opinion of the people. Although this system is relatively inequitable, many Chinese people can currently receive comparatively higher wages. I think this famous saying from Deng Xiaoping: “It does not matter if it is a White Cat or Black Cat, if it catches mice it is certainly a good cat.” Is very interesting, because at the time he said this, Mao Zedong’s government was allowing many people to starve. At that time, Deng Xiaoping’s ideology was truly practical. Mao Zedong’s pure Communism had created great damage to the nation, so the Chinese government needed to use a State-Owned Capitalist system in order to repair the nation. Compared to then, China’s current standard of living has improved. However, the Chinese’s people’s standard of free speech compared to their standard of living is not as well established. If China’s government does not have freedom of speech, how can they call their current system of government modern?

Since I was small, I have been interested in architecture. I my free time, I like to read architectural magazines and go to visit interesting buildings. Because of China’s economic growth, China has many new buildings. Shanghai and Beijing both have especially pretty architecture, in both of those cities, there are also a lot of new construction sites. Among them, my favorite is the Commune by the Great Wall.

The Commune by the Great Wall is a privately-owned housing resort. It is not to far from Badaling, and a little bit further from Beijing. Driving there from Beijing only takes one hour and fifteen minutes. The Commune has twelve villas. Anyone can rent one, however the cost is very expensive! I do not plan to go stay there, but I believe that it must be especially beautiful there.

Twelve famous Asian architects built the villas, among which none are the same style. They are all in the modern style. The Commune by the Great wall also has a spa and three dining rooms so I feel that this “commune” is really more like an especially luxurious hotel.

I have still not visited there, but the villas look like they are far from civilization. The surrounding mountains there are covered in a lot of greenery. From inside some of the rooms, one can even see the Great Wall out the windows! I do not know how many rooms, or which ones have the view of the Great Wall. There are a few different classes of room: the presidential suite, deluxe suites, family suites, ect. I think the more expensive ones have the best views.

My favorite villa is the Bamboo House. The architect is called Kengo Kuma. He comes from Japan. He knows that Chinese and Japanese cultures both believe that bamboo has unique qualities so he thought he could use bamboo to separate the house’s inner space. He drew his inspiration from the Great Wall. Inside the house, there is a large bamboo wall, this way the house feels like the Great Wall.

This villa is in harmony with the surrounding scenery. I think that to stay there might be the most enjoyable. Besides using bamboo, Kengo Kuma also uses large glass windows and ponds inside the house. I think that the rooms there are certainly bright and free-flowing. I believe that the architect wished for the guests staying there to self-reflect, but because I have not been, I do not know for certain. I hope that one day I can go to the Commune by the Great Wall to visit; however, I only want to take a few pictures and look around. This way, I will be content.

Hello Everybody! The subject of my report is about religion in Taiwan. Compared to the mainland, Taiwan has more freedoms. Amongst these freedoms, a very important one is religious freedom. Therefore, right now Taiwan still practices faiths that are no longer prevalent on mainland China. In Taiwan, there is a rich and diverse religious heritage. The largest religion is Buddhism, and according to the most recent statistics, it currently has about 8 million adherents. The second largest religion is Daoism with about 7 million adherents. However, because Chinese religions are not as exclusive as other faiths, many Taiwanese people practice both. Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism are generally called the Three Doctrines. Several deities reflect this custom. There is one bodhisattva by the name of Guanyin. She is both a bodhisattva in Buddhism, and as a deity in Daoism.
In Taiwan Daoism has many common customs with Chinese Folk Religion. Whenever you enter a temple, you must first take three sticks of incense from the container, then light the incense, place the incense in front of the deity’s image, and then bow three times. The third largest religion is Christianity, with about 800,000 followers. Taiwan has many syncretic faiths. These faiths often tie in western religious beliefs. For example , I Kuan Tao became a very large religion in the Seventies, with about 800,000 adherents. I Kuan Tao combines Buddhist, Daoist, and Christian beliefs.
One very important deity is called Mazu. She was born in Fujian Province during the Song Dynasty. During her lifetime, she saved many fisherman and mariners. Therefore, after she rose to heaven, In coastal areas Mazu became a goddess to protect fishermen. During the Qing Dynasty, many people from Fujian immigrated to Taiwan, and they brought Mazu Worship with them to the island. Nowadays, Mazu is a famous deity in Taiwan. Every year on the 23rd day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar no less than 100,000 people will come to the Dajia Zhenlan Temple in Taizhong to celebrate Mazu’s birthday. Adherents will first take a statue of Mazu from the temple in Taizhong and bring it to the Fengtian Temple in Xingang, and after return it to Taizhong. During the pilgrimage, the pilgrims will light fireworks, and also pray for blessings. Because they want Mazu to bless them, they let the image of Mazu pass over their bodies. If you ever take an opportunity to go to Taiwan, you must attend this fantastic festival.

Buddhism is a religion originating in India. Buddhism is a popular religion all over the world. In the U.S.A, about 1% of the population believes in Buddhism. There are many schools of Buddhism all over the world. There are many modern and ancient interpretations of Buddhist texts. Although Buddhism is a religion, many people view it as a philosophy. Anyone can learn Buddhism, although it is most popular in India.
Students of Buddhism study writings of the Buddha. Buddhism believes that suffering is caused y desire. When your desires end, then suffering will end. The goal of Buddhism is to reach Enlightenment. Buddhism studies meditation, yoha, tai chi, and other healthy lifestyle habits. Most Buddhists believe in reincarnation. Buddhism tries to educate students about maintaining a peaceful life.
Buddhism’s most important principle is the Four Noble Truths. The first of the four noble truths is that life involves suffering, and we must avoid the suffering and find happiness. The second Four Noble Truths is that we suffer because we have desires, so we must break away from our desires. The third Noble Truth is that we can overcome our suffering by learning to live in the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or the future. The fourth Noble Truth is that through an eight-step path we can get rid of our suffering. If you learn the Four Noble Truths, then you will achieve a life of compassion and happiness.

他们是Will Ferrel和Jack Black。
Last summer, I worked at Legoland in California. I worked at a restaurant. The restaurant is called “The Garden.” The Garden served vegetarian dishes. I have learned a lot at Legoland. I do not regret working there. People may think that working at Legoland is a fun job, but it’s not. There are a lot of impatient parents and sometimes the kids are unhappy. However, I had good coworkers.

Working at a restaurant is hard work because it’s busy all the time and we have hungry customers. The parents sometimes didn’t want to be there. The food was overpriced. Sometimes the kids wouldn’t want to eat. Their parents said, “I spent so much money on the food. Eat it.” The kids would cry. However, some families were very nice.

At LegoLand, I saw two movie stars: Will Ferrel and Jack Black. Surprisingly, they were very polite. However, I am an employee, so I can’t talk to them much. If I am not busy, I would try to make conversation with them. Many customers at Legoland speak another language. If I heard someone speaking Chinese, I would try to talk with them. One time, I talked with a Chinese family. I got the email address of their son and we email each other every once in awhile.

My friend, Lavie, also worked at Legoland. She sold legos. Sometimes, she would come to the Garden and we would have lunch. We discussed our jobs. She sometimes would tease me that I had to go clean tables. I was very happy that I could talk with Lavien and have an opportunity to rest.

Overall, my time at Legoland was sometimes good, sometimes bad. But I’m glad I had the opportunity to work there.

  9. Eric
    English Translation:
Chinese popular Music is my hobby. Chinese Pop was made popular by Alex To, he is an R&B singer. Singers often come from mainland china, hongkong, beijing, malaysia, singapore, and america.  Some famous Chinese male stars are, Jay Chou, Wei Chen, and Wang Leehorn.  Chinese pop unlike Korean pop seems like it has a lot of ballads.Chinese pop is often very slow therefore it is hard to dance to.  Outside of China, a lot of people do not care for Chinese Pop, it is not too popular.  In Shanghai, Chinese pop also started from 1940s but was not very popular.  Chinese Pop has three genres, Canto pop, Mando pop, and Hokkein pop.  Hokkein pop is very similar to japanese pop. However, Canto pop and Mando pop are more ballady.
Right now, Korean pop has some chinese stars.  I often hear chinese singers in korea.  Koreans really like Chinese stars because Chingese stars can speak Korean and Chinese.  A lot of singers can speak multiple languages, therefore they can sing in multiple countries.  Two Chinese famous singers called Jia, and Fei, can speak Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
Now, hopefully hip hop will enter Chinese pop and fast.  Perhaps Chinese stars will change.

答應 da1ying1 to agreeA long time ago, there was a pretty ninja princess. Every day she had to do a lot of work, but she wanted to explore.
One night she decided to run away. When no one was looking, she wore all black and ran away. The weather was bad and it was cold. She entered a small house. She didn’t know if there was anyone there, but she needed to rest. The next morning after she woke up, she saw a man looking at her.
The ninja princess asked him, “Who are you?”
The man answered: “I am a farmer. And you? Why are you in my house?”
The ninja princess said, “My dad is very strict and won’t let me explore. So I wanted to escape.”
The farmer wanted to help the ninja princess. The farmer gave the priness some food and new clothes. He let the princess stay at his house. She also helped the farmer sweep the floor and clean the dishes. She did not want to be a lazy person, she wanted to be helpful.
The past few days, the ninja princess thought the farmer was nice and good looking. Oh. The ninja princess fell in love with him!
The ninja princess decided that she had lived with the farmer too long and must return home. She thanked the farmer. The farmer asked the ninja princess, “Why are you leaving? I really like having you live with me.”
The ninja princess did not want to tell the farmer she fell in love with him. She said, “My family definitely misses me. Now I should return home.”
The farmer said, “I don’t want you to leave. I don’t want to all by myself. I have fallen in love with you and I think you have fallen in love with me. Please stay.”
The ninja princess didn’t know who tot say. She really wanted to stay, but she should return home. Now she had two homes: the farmers and the palace. Finally she said, “I want to stay, but I must return home and see my family. After I see them, I will definitely return. Please wait for me. I will return in about 3 days.”
After the two lovers said goodbye, the ninja princess went home.

The ninja emperor was not happy. The ninja princess could not leave the palace. A lot of bodyguards watched her. Wherever she went, bodyguards would also go.
After 2 months, the ninja princess still was at the palace and couldn’t go to see the farmer. The farmer did not know she could not leave the palace. Every day was uninteresting.
One day the ninja princess heard a farmer came to the palace. She hoped that the farmer was her farmer.
The ninhja princess quickly went upstairs. Yes! Her farmer was at the palace. She saw the farmer and heard him say:
“Ninja emperor. I am a farmer. I want to find a pretty woman, but I don’t know her family. She told me she would return to my house, but she still has not returned. Please, help me.”
The ninja princess said, “I am here! You found me!”
The ninja emperor was mad. He responded, “Ninja princess, you leave the palace and live with this dumb person. You cannot live in his house. He is extremely poor!”
The ninja princess said, “You cannot make my decisions. I want to live wit him so I will!”
Suddenly many evil ninjas attacked the palace. Ninja princess, Ninja emperor, and ninja bodyguards protect the palace. Because the farmer didn’t know kung fu, he did not participate.
A monkey was in back of the emperor. No one could see this monkey. The monkey attacked the emperor, but the farmer stopped the monkey and got hurt. Finally all the monkeys leave. The farmer is not too badly hurt.
The ninja emperor said, “Farmer, you saved me, I must help you. If you want to marry my daughter, you must learn kung fu and become a ninja. After you can marry the ninja princess.”
    The farmer agreed.
    And everyone was happy.

Here in the United States we eat some American style Chinese food. But many Americans have not eaten real Chinese food, nor do they know much about it. I have not yet been to China, so I also have not had real Chinese food. I cannot wait to go to Taiwan over the summer break this year to study abroad, where I can have real Chinese food for the first time. I hear Taiwan has the best Chinese cuisine. Cuisine is a very important part of Chinese culture. Real Chinese food and American style are not the same. American Chinese restaurants only have basic dishes. They have pot stickers, soup, noodles, etc. But it all pales in comparison to real Chinese food.
Chinese cuisine has eight regional traditions; they are called the Eight Culinary Traditions of China. There are Hui, Yue, Min, Xiang, Jiangsu, Lu, Chuan, and Xinjiang cuisines. Among these Yue, Lu, Jiangsu, and Chuan are the most famous. They are called the four great traditions.
Sichuan style might be the most famous Chinese cuisine. Sichuan style food often has garlic, chili pepper, and Sichuan peppercorn. Sichuan is a very spicy cuisine. Lu cuisine is a culinary tradition from the Northeast part of China, it is an old style from the Shandong Province. Lu style often has Chinese onion and garlic, with seafood, soup, or meat. Jiangsu province is in the Eastern part of China. It is very close to Anhui, Xinjiang, and Shandong. Jiangsu food is often very sweet.
Yue cuisine is from Guangdong. One very interesting Yue dish is the Chrysanthemum Fish. The chef cuts the fish to look like a flower, and after deep frying the fish really looks like a chrysanthemum. In the 19th century many people from Guangdong Province immigrated to foreign countries, so Cantonese food is very famous outside of China. When American people talk about Chinese food they are often really talking about Cantonese. Dim Sum is one type of Yue cuisine, it is very popular outside of China. I have already had a fair amount of American style Dim Sum. I don’t think the Dim Sum here is as good as in China, but it is still very good.
